Welcome to Kipps Elementary Before and After School Fun and Learning!
Meet Kurt Koonce
Hello! My name is Kurt Koonce and I have lived in and visited many places. I have been in Christiansburg for most of my life. I am a Radford University Highlander with a major in sociology. With sociology, I focus on macro-level (large-scale) groups to better understand society.
I am twenty four years old and have worked with children for about eight years. I have done many internships and volunteer services throughout the community and the New River Valley. I have worked with New River Valley Community Services (NRVCS) with substance abuse groups, and children who are bipolar, schizophrenic, have ADD, and/or ODD. I have also worked at Narrows Elementary School with their after school program.
I recently had the chance to work with some amazing students at Floyd County High School with an oral history project called, “Roots with Wings.” This opportunity has shed a new light on my life because I got to get into the community to interview WWII veterans and make their stories come to life. We created a documentary video with the students about life during the time of WWII. I met some of the most kind-hearted, down to earth people that enjoy every moment.
Not only have I worked with children, but I have also worked with prevention groups with families. This experience allowed me to see how important it is to teach children young and to help them communicate.
The Adventure Club has been a wonderful company to work for. I have worked with the company when I was in high school for about three years as a teacher. Four years later I am now the Site Manager at Kipps Elementary School in Blacksburg. I am so blessed to have such wonderful people to work for and with.
I am a very optimistic individual with positive energy that I love shedding on all of the children. Since I have been a Manager at Kipps, I’ve heard many wonderful things about my influence on that program in the past couple of months. I plan on being consistent to ensure that we keep the program a great place for kids. I also plan on being a great teacher, role model, and positive influence for the children. I absolutely love my job and love working with children.
My objective and goal with this program is to help improve the quality of life for the children. After all, children are the future.
A Note from The Adventure Club:
Kurt’s personality is magnetic. He has permanent smile on his face. The children and staff have truly enjoyed being around him. He is equally wonderful at leading group games and interacting with children as he is at handling paperwork and explaining how amazing The Adventure Club is at marketing events!
Kurt came back to The Adventure Club as a Site Manager in the middle of the last school year. We look forward to seeing what positive influences he can make on the Kipps Program with the full school year ahead!
